I recently did a little Spring cleaning in my bathroom and tackled my cabinet and drawers. This was the perfect time to clean out any expired, unloved or forgotten products.
To be honest, I try to keep my products as organized as possible. I recently picked up clear “shoe boxes” from my local Home Depot to help organize and keep everything together and the mess at bay.
Depending on how big your collection is, or how often you like to switch things up, keep a tray, bag or drawer with all your everyday, go to, most used products corralled in it. This way, you are not digging through your collection, wasting time trying to find that eye liner pencil and accidentally use a brow pencil to line your eyes!
My collection is small, compared to most Beauty Lovers! I like to keep things minimal. So I use a small drawer system, purchased from my local dollar store! It was inexpensive and serves the purpose of what I need and have to store.
Put “in storage” what you do not use everyday
Go through your collection and put anything that does not get used everyday away. Maybe you change up your foundation for Winter and Summer. Maybe you only wear certain lip colours in the summer months. Put anything that you wont need away so that you have room for your most “in the moment” beloved products.
I like to stay stocked up on certain products. Like dry shampoo, my face cleansing products and makeup removing wipes, cotton balls and razors. Those are all stored in the back of the cabinet, in a clear tote for easy viewing.
Use Organizing Tools
Whether it be drawers, bins, or cups. Have a place for everything. Organize by product, brand, colour; whatever works for you!
I have one drawer that is devoted to MY products. I use plastic dollar store “food” containers to divide my products in and small shot glasses. I bought an inexpensive plastic drawer unit from my local dollar store to organize my beauty products under the sink. I use “magazine” holders to store my hair appliances and every day styling hair products in as well. The clear tote bins are used in the tall cabinet and helps with everyday products, long term storage of not used everyday products and items and my “over flow” of most loved products that I keep a spare of.
Keep the names visible, if possible
This is most important with lip products. Some companies have solid, one colour packaging which makes it hard to tell at a quick glance which shade is which. If you store them upside down in a lipstick holder or lay them flat (like I do) you will have a better look at which is which, making it quicker and easier to grab your favourite or just the right colour!
“There is a place for everything, everything in its place”
Benjamin Franklin said it best! I grew up with this mentality and live by it today. Everything should have a place, and that is where, after using said object, be returned so that at a later date and time, said object can be easily found.
This will keep your space, whether it be your own personal beauty room or shared bathroom, organized, clutter free and you will have a greater chance of not misplacing anything (which causes you to repurchase the product, only to find it a day after you have already bought the product again! Who has had this happen to them?)
Miscellaneous Items/Hard to store products
Nail polish, palettes and tools can all be hard to store or find the appropriate place for them to be stored until needed the next time.
I have a tall cabinet in my “personal room” that I store my nail polish and nail polish products in. I have a tray that keeps them all in line, stored by brand. Keep in mind, that nail polish should be kept in a dry and cool place. The bathroom is not the best place, especially if there is a shower.
I only have 2 palettes as of right now. So storing them is not an issue. However, if you have more than 2 (How many do you have?) than using an office folder holder or a basket to store them would work nicely. If you can dedicate a full drawer to them, lining them up like books on a shelf with the labels facing upwards would work as well.
The one item that I have trouble with storing until the next use, is my makeup sponge. As of right now, I keep it on a white towel under the sink. I know that this is not the best place for it and it could be collecting germs and dirt, but I fear that if I put it away in a container or dish that it will not get dry fully and I’m faced with the same germs and dirt as mentioned above! Do you have any suggestions for storing the sponges that we use everyday?
How is your storage looking these days? Where any of these tips helpful? Do you have any tips and tricks of your own?
